Press Release

Obama’s ExCel Visit Triggers Interiors Show Date Switch

Show organisers easyFairs® have been forced to reschedule a commercial interiors exhibition after it emerged the ExCel Arena host venue would be on security lock-down during a meeting of world leaders.

easyFairs® INTERIOR FIT-OUT – the UK’s only event dedicated to commercial, retail and leisure interior refurbishment services – was due to be held on April 1st and 2nd at the London Docklands centre.

Almost 80 companies, including some of the country’s leading shopfitters, have already signed up to exhibit, whilst easyFairs® is expecting some 1,500 architects and designers to attend.

But ExCel officials have said the entire facility, including exhibition halls, will now be off-limits before and during the G20 Summit of world leaders and finance ministers planned to take place there on April 2nd.

easyFairs® INTERIOR FIT-OUT has now been rescheduled for April 29th and 30th.

The G20 Summit, which will be used to discuss a global ‘road map’ for economic recovery, marks the first foreign trip as US President for Barack Obama. And easyFairs® Managing Director Peter Heath appreciates they had no choice but to switch show dates.

He said: “We already have a large number of exhibitors confirmed and hundreds of architects and designers had the original dates pencilled into their diaries, but there’s absolutely nothing we could do.

“However, it’s still all systems go for the exhibition and we hope to build on the success of last year’s debut easyFairs® INTERIOR FIT-OUT. Also, the postponement means it will now be co-located with the Grand Designs Live show…so it could be a blessing in disguise.”

“It’s a shame the two events couldn’t run simultaneously. I’m sure President Obama is looking to stamp his own styling on the Oval Office…perhaps he could have checked out some of the show’s interiors specialists during lunch!”

ExCel’s Managing Director David Pegler, added: “easyFairs® INTERIOR FIT-OUT is an important show for us, and particularly pertinent given all the construction work in the pipeline at ExCel, the neighbouring 2012 Olympics site, and the various developments in the east end of London.

“We’ve identified a convenient replacement date for the show and will offer all the support we can.”

Last year’s inaugural easyFairs® INTERIOR FIT-OUT proved a great success, attracting almost 100 exhibitors and 1,100 visitors and establishing itself as a key date for designers tasked with creating stimulating interiors for hotels, restaurants, leisure facilities, and public buildings.

The show is backed by RIBA, the National Association of Shopfitters (NAS), the Association of Interior Specialists (AIS) and the Chartered Society of Designers.

Association of Interior Specialists Chief Executive Simon Forrester, said: “Last year’s show proved overwhelmingly popular with our members and illustrated the need for a dedicated event for the commercial interiors sector. I’m sure that staging the event alongside Grand Designs Live will bring in additional exhibitors and visitors.”

And Robert Hudson, Chairman of the National Association of Shopfitters (NAS), added: “Delaying the event for a few weeks shouldn’t pose too many difficulties for members unless. Naturally, the show continues to receive our full backing.”
