Government Funding Update: Financial Incentives for Hiring Young People

The UK Government has updated its range of financial incentives for employers who provide training and work opportunities for young people. While apprenticeships remain a key pillar, there are several alternative pathways that offer significant funding without the immediate requirement of a full apprenticeship framework.

Incentives at a Glance

Programme Type Requirements Incentive Payment
T-Level Industry Placement 16–19 year olds; minimum 315 hours £1,000 per placement
Work Experience 16–18 year olds; minimum 70 hours £1,000 per student
Apprenticeships 16–18 (or 19–24 with EHC plan) £1,000 (paid in two instalments)
Sector-Based Work Academies (SWAP) 16+; pre-employment training Up to £1,000 for employer costs

Key Opportunities for Members

For firms looking to build their talent pool with less initial administrative overhead, the T-Level and Work Experience routes offer a “try-before-you-buy” approach. These allow you to assess a young person’s fit for your business while receiving a direct £1,000 incentive.

Furthermore, Sector-Based Work Academies (SWAP) provide a way to recruit staff who have already received basic pre-employment training tailored to the industry, with funding available to help cover the costs of the recruitment process.

Additional Member Support

To help members utilise these government routes effectively, the following support is available:

  • Site Readiness: NAS and IOC employers can access free red SICCS trainee cards for young people brought in through these schemes to ensure they are site-compliant from day one.

  • Pathways to Qualification: Once a trainee is settled, they can be progressed onto an NVQ at a discounted rate through HSS Training, providing a cost-effective route to a fully qualified workforce.
