The Construction Leadership Council (CLC) has released its latest biennial report, detailing the industry’s progress over the last year and outlining the strategic priorities that will shape the sector through 2026.
For NAS members, the report highlights several key “wins” and ongoing workstreams that directly impact our day-to-day operations:
1. Fairer Payment & Retentions
The CLC has been actively responding to government consultations on tackling late payments and reforming the practice of retentions. This remains a top priority to ensure better cash flow and fairer treatment for specialist contractors across the supply chain.
2. Building Safety Act Implementation
In collaboration with the Building Safety Regulator and the HSE, the CLC is driving the implementation of the Building Safety Act. This includes the development of over 40 competency frameworks through the Industry Competence Steering Group—a move that reinforces the need for accredited, professional shopfitting standards.
3. People & Skills
The establishment of the Construction Skills Mission Board is set to support a £625m investment in industry skills. As we continue to advocate for the value of shopfitting as a specialist craft, this high-level focus on competency and recruitment is a welcome step.
4. Net Zero & The Circular Economy
The CO2nstructZero programme has now grown to involve over 300 companies. With sustainability becoming a core requirement in retail and hospitality tenders, the CLC’s focus on the circular economy reflects the shift we are seeing across the high street.
What this means for you: The CLC’s focus on competency, fair payment, and sustainability aligns perfectly with the standards we promote at the NAS. As these strategic pillars are embedded into government policy and major project requirements, being a member of a recognised professional body becomes even more vital.
