Understanding the Difference Between a Diploma and an S/NVQ
When investing thousands of pounds in a qualification for a new entrant into our sector, it’s crucial to understand the difference between two commonly discussed options: occupation-related non-competence qualifications and occupational competence qualifications.
In this latest Skills Update, your NAS Skills Lead Amanda Scott explains the key distinctions.
“While both qualification types are valuable, they serve distinct purposes and meet different industry standards. The primary distinction lies in practical site experience and industry recognition.”
Occupational Competence Qualifications (e.g. S/NVQs)
NVQs, or SVQs in Scotland, certify an individual’s ability to work independently and safely in their trade and ensure eligibility for a SICCS Skills Card.
Why they matter:
-
Designed to assess both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
-
Require learners to demonstrate their ability in real on-site working environments.
-
Recognised by industry as the benchmark for skilled work.
-
Essential for gaining a SICCS or CSCS Skilled Worker card.
Occupation-Related Non-Competence Qualifications (e.g. Diplomas)
These qualifications cover theoretical and practical knowledge but do not include real site-based assessment.
Why this matters:
-
Delivered in simulated environments, not on-site.
-
Do not meet the occupational competence standards required for skilled worker cards.
-
Examples include:
-
NOCN Level 3 Diploma in Wood Occupations – Shopfitting
-
City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Site Carpentry
-
⚠️ Holders of these qualifications are not eligible for SICCS or CSCS Skilled Worker cards.
If you have an individual who has completed one of these diplomas or is considering enrolling in one, they must complete an S/NVQ to meet industry requirements.
